We continue to take part in the Composting for Schools initiative in conjunction with Meath County Council. Last year we installed a Compost Container. We continue to fill the compost container with a mix of grass cuttings and fallen leaves. It takes about six months for the leaves and grass to break down and we will use the compost that is created on our flower beds. We predict that by using this natural compost it will enrich the soil and allow our flowers, plants, shrubs and vegetables to grow better.
We received Leaf Cages from the Composting for Schools scheme and gathered leaves in the Autumn and filled these so they will create leaf mold.
Last year Craig Benton came to visit our school to carry out a Composting Workshop with some of the 4th and 6th class students and installed a wormery in our school garden.
Each week we top up our wormery with fruit peels and skins.
We were delighted to welcome Craig Benton back to our school today. Craig held a workshop with our 4th class students and our Climate Ambassadors and then brought the students outside to help him rebed the wormery. We will use the compost it has created in the coming months for our flower beds.
