S.T.E.M
At Dunboyne Senior Primary School, we are incredibly proud of our dynamic and innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programme. Over the past number of years, we have made a significant investment in STEM education, creating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking in all of our pupils.
Our commitment to excellence in STEM has been recognised at the highest level. We are honoured to have received the Research Ireland Curious Minds Platinum Award for several consecutive years and are particularly proud to be the only primary school in Meath to have achieved this outstanding distinction.
A key focus of our STEM work is sustainability and environmental awareness. Through our Green Schools programme, we have been working towards our Global Citizenship: Litter and Waste flag, taking meaningful action to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices. Initiatives such as the Picker Pals programme, the Composting for Schools Programme in conjunction with Meath County Council, and our annual Halloween upcycle costume competition encourage pupils to think creatively about reducing, reusing, and recycling.
We have also recently introduced a Return Bin in the school, where pupils collect bottles and cans as part of a national recycling initiative. The funds raised from this initiative are used to support and further develop our STEM projects. In addition, we participate in the Our Shoes Campaign, collecting used shoes in good condition to support children in African townships. These initiatives help to foster a strong sense of global citizenship and social responsibility among our pupils.
Our efforts have led to measurable improvements in recycling rates and a significant reduction in waste across the school.
Our school garden is at the heart of our biodiversity work. Pupils actively engage in planting, growing, and harvesting, while learning about ecosystems, food production, and environmental stewardship. We have introduced a wide range of initiatives including rainwater harvesting, composting, pollinator-friendly planting, biodiversity trails, and the creation of habitats such as bird boxes, bat boxes, hedgerows, and even a micro pond. These experiences allow children to connect with nature and understand the importance of protecting biodiversity. Our work in this area has been widely recognised, and we were proud to be named Green Schools Biodiversity Primary School of the Year in 2024, as well as receiving a Golden Beaver Award in the Nature Hero Competition and a Gold Award in the Pride of Place School Garden Scheme.
We are also delighted to have been awarded the Schools Award in the National Tidy Towns Competition, recognising our contribution to our local community and environment. Our commitment to sustainable food production was celebrated when we were named National Winners in the Agri Aware Incredible Edibles Competition 2025.
Scientific inquiry and real-world investigation are central to our STEM approach. Through our involvement in GLOBE Ireland campaigns—including Air Quality, Temperatures and Trees, Rainfall and Flood Resilience, and Rivers as Ecosystems—our pupils become active citizen scientists. They collect, analyse, and submit data to global databases, connecting their local learning to global scientific research and collaborating with students around the world.
Engineering and problem-solving are further developed through participation in initiatives such as the STEPS Engineering Competition, where pupils design innovative solutions to real-world challenges. We also take part in Science Blast, showcasing our investigations and sharing our learning with a wider audience.
Technology plays a key role in our STEM programme. Our pupils participate in the Microsoft DreamSpace Ambassadors Programme and DreamSpace Showcase, where they explore coding, digital creativity, and the Sustainable Development Goals. They have also led Safer Internet Day presentations and hosted a “Tea and Tech” event for Grandparents’ Day, demonstrating leadership and digital awareness within our school community.
Creativity is an important part of STEM in our school. Pupils have designed and painted two stunning murals that celebrate our learning—one inspired by the heritage of Dunboyne and the Wonder Wander Trail, and another reflecting the actions we have taken to support the Sustainable Development Goals. These projects highlight how STEM can connect with art, history, and community.
We also encourage logical thinking and problem-solving through participation in the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge. In addition, our lunchtime Chess Club for 5th and 6th class pupils provides opportunities to develop strategic thinking, and our students proudly represent the school each year in the Féile Fichille Inter-Schools Chess Tournament.
At Dunboyne Senior Primary School, STEM is more than a subject—it is a way of thinking, exploring, and understanding the world. Through our wide range of initiatives and achievements, we aim to empower our pupils to become curious learners, creative problem-solvers, and responsible global citizens, ready to make a positive impact on the world around them.
