NUMERACY

At Dunboyne Senior Primary School, we believe that meaningful learning happens when children are actively engaged, curious, and confident in exploring ideas. This is especially true in numeracy, where our aim is to develop not only strong mathematical skills, but also positive attitudes and a lifelong appreciation for maths.
We strive to make maths visible, relevant, and enjoyable across the school. Children are encouraged to use their “maths eyes” to spot and explore mathematics in the world around them, whether in the patterns they see in art, the data they gather in science, or the problems they encounter in everyday life. By integrating numeracy across subject areas, we help pupils understand that maths is not just a standalone subject, but an essential life skill.
Hands-on learning plays a central role in our approach. We make extensive use of concrete materials to support understanding and allow children to explore mathematical concepts in a tangible way. Through collaborative activities, discussion, and exploration, pupils build confidence and deepen their understanding.
Problem-solving is at the heart of our maths teaching. Children are encouraged to think critically, try different strategies, and recognise that there can be multiple ways to arrive at a solution. We actively promote maths talk in the classroom, giving pupils opportunities to explain their thinking, listen to others, and refine their ideas. Mistakes are valued as an important part of the learning process, helping children to develop resilience and a growth mindset.
We also provide a range of enriching experiences to foster enthusiasm for maths. Our pupils participate in Maths Week each year, engaging in fun and challenging activities that celebrate numeracy. Maths trails offer opportunities to apply skills in real-world contexts, while initiatives such as Bebras and coding activities using Indi Robots and Micro:bits support the development of logical thinking, problem-solving, and computational skills.
A lunchtime Chess Club is available for 5th and 6th class pupils, providing further opportunities to develop strategic thinking, concentration, and problem-solving skills. Our students also proudly represent the school in the annual Féile Fichille Inter-Schools Chess Tournament.
At Dunboyne Senior Primary School, we are committed to creating a positive and engaging maths environment where every child feels capable, supported, and inspired to succeed.
